“Leonard and Gobi’s story represents the power of people working together and the profound depth of feeling possible between a man and his dog.”--Publishers Weekly

A man, a dog, and the lengths to which love will go to sacrifice for its companion.

Finding Gobi is the miraculous tale of Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultramarathon runner who crosses paths with a stray dog while competing in a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert in China. The lovable pup, who would later earn the name Gobi, proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the Tian Shan Mountains, across massive sand dunes, through yurt villages and the black sands of the Gobi Desert, keeping pace with him for 77 miles.

As Dion witnessed the incredible determination and heart of this small animal, he found his own heart undergoing a change as well.  Whereas in the past these races were all about winning and being the best, his goal now was to make sure he and Gobi’s friendship continued well after the finish line.  He found himself letting Gobi sleep in his tent at night, giving her food and water out of his own limited supply, and carrying her across numerous rivers, even when he knew it would mean putting him behind in the race, or worse, prevent him from finishing at all.

Although Dion did not cross the finish line first, he felt he had won something even greater – a new outlook on life and a new friend that he planned on bringing home as soon as arrangements were made.  However, before he could take her home, Gobi went missing in the sprawling Chinese city where she was being kept. Dion, with the help of strangers and a viral outpouring of assistance on the internet, set out to track her down, and reunite forever with the amazing animal that changed his life and proved to him and the world that miracles are possible.

  • Humanity still exists

Being the lucky owner of three rescues, this pulled me in from the moment I read the description on Amazon. As my dogs do for our family so to do I hope they will for their family. Gobi is amazing.
  • Good read

I was captured by this book with the adventure in the Gobi Desert. However I had a hard time finishing the book as it seemed to become a little dull nearing the end. Overall it was a good book and I recommend it to anyone.

To say this is a feel good story is an understatement. Read it start to finish in one evening with my three rescue dogs at my feet.
  • Feel good Story

This is a great story of how people all over the world, from different cultures are similar in caring for others. I don't believe it would have the same great ending without the global support this man received. Great Book!

A simple but heartwarming account of a man and a little dog that changed his life. Very quick read that is interesting at every turn.
  • Great book for animal lovers and runners

I have read this book twice. The first time was to read more details about the dog story I followed online. Although I followed the journey online and saw interviews, I learned a lot of new details that I didn't know before. The second time I read it, I focused more on the running story. I am also a runner and could relate to the struggles we endurance athletes have (although I am not an ultra runner). Reading about the various marathons and ultras he's done, especially the Gobi desert race, were so interesting that I've decided to do my next marathon in another country (although most likely Europe and not China). I highly recommend this book to both animal lovers and people who enjoy reading books about running.
  • The feel good story of 2016

    By lauramc511
The feel good story of 2016 is now a full length book, the story told by Dion Leonard himself. We learn enough about his younger years to understand where he was mentally and emotionally when Gobi chose him as her person in the deserts of China. This is the story of how they met and the hoops he had to jump thru to bring her home. As always there is SO MUCH more to the story than the blurb we saw on the evening news. For instance-spoiler alert-he had to find her twice! Very well written. Dion draws you in and you read every word to see what happens next even though you know the outcome! There are several parts that will bring you to tears, yet it is a book that helps bring back faith in our humanity. Gobi inspired many during her situation and continues to now through this book. I highly recommend it to anyone, but especially dog lovers. Remember: adopt don't shop. Bring more Gobi's home. Disclaimer: This book was provided to me by the publisher, however I was under no obligation to leave a positive review. The opinions are my own.
  • Best story about dog love

    By adrianac85
I loved the book so much. I enjoyed it a lot. I love the story about true love between a dog and the human she found. The best part of this story is that it is real and it has a happy ending. It can be read in one day for sure. It has ups and downs and you will laugh, cry and feel all your emotions through all the book. Must read if you love running, dogs or love stories.
