Book Review

Davy has always been alone. He believes that he's the only person in the world who can teleport. But what if he isn't?

A mysterious group of people has taken Davy captive. They don't want to hire him, and they don't have any hope of appealing to him to help them. What they want is to own him. They want to use his abilities for their own purposes, whether Davy agrees to it or not. And so they set about brainwashing him and conditioning him. They have even found a way to keep a teleport captive.

But there's one thing that they don't know. No one knows it, not even Davy. And it might save his life....

"This is a fun, fast-paced novel that - like Gould's other books - also has a social conscience that gives it more depth than such a story might have in lesser hands. You don't need to have read Jumper to enjoy the new novel, but [it's] highly recommended." - Charles de Lint, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction on Reflex

"Though Gould continues to exuberantly press the boundaries of scientific credibility, his gift for placing ordinary people in extraordinary situations against a backdrop of international concerns makes this fast-paced adventure sizzle." - Publishers Weekly, starred review on Reflex

I love the concept of this book. I love the technical aspects that Gould brought to this book. And I think the overall idea of it is compelling. I read jumper, his first book after seeing the movie. But the author is horrible at re-creating natural dialogue between his characters. It got to the point where it was so distracting I found myself rolling my eyes and muttering to myself. I went ahead and finished the book because I love the idea of these characters teleporting and the freedom and power it gives them. That part was very intriguing. If Gould could figure a way of telling his story without having his characters speak he would have a winner. Overall a great concept but unfortunately not executed very well

This was great. Not as good as Jumper, but that is my favorite book of all time. This was really good and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time!

Perfect fantasy novel. Puts you directly in the action, to where you almost think you can do it. Then an excellent read on a dark stormy night as well. This is the second book I have read so far and am getting the next book now. Enjoy your read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Just what I wanted from a sequel

I enjoyed the first novel not for the character development, but mainly because the premise seemed like a fun experiment: What would someone do if they could teleport? What would their life be like? Now that you are familiar with these skills, Reflex is a good sequel; it piggy backs on what you already know, and adds more obstacles for our characters to overcome. Although I don't read much sci-fi, I was thoroughly entertained by this for two reasons: 1. More scenarios for the characters to overcome and 2. I enjoy the universe and wanted to see more of it. I got what I wanted. Thanks, Mr. Gould.
  • Excellent - but...

Hey - I really liked this book. I read it immediately after reading Jumper - in hindsight, I probably would've enjoyed it more if I waited a month between the two. Here's my but. There are two chapters that dive into a detailed review of a story line that sooo doesn't matter. I was worried that we were going on a goose chase. But, the book and story quickly resumed. Phew. Great read.
