Book Review

"This renewing of us by the Holy Ghost, as it is called, is one great way of mortification: he causes us to grow, thrive, flourish and abound in those graces which are contrary, opposite, and destructive to all the fruits of the flesh, and to the quiet or thriving of indwelling sin."

The Mortification of Sin is an incisive treatise on a topic much neglected in the church. Written in the 17th century by the English Puritan, John Owen, this work has been an unfailing aid for believers for several centuries as a corrective against the notion of "harmless sin." Owen refutes this completely with his famous quote: "Be killing sin, or it will be killing you." Though Owen's style can be dense, reading this treatise one senses his acute sensitivity for doctrine is precisely the remedy for true Christian living.

  • Worth tackling in old English

Written to Christian believers only, as a guide for cleansing their lives of sins. It is still written in the Puritan English and is not modern or simple. However, it is still one of the best how-to books for anyone willing to spend the mental energy to read it. Again, it was specifically written to believers. To mortify sin means to engage in a process of putting sin to death in your life. This handbook is an intense study on why and how to do this in our lives in a scripturally correct way. Scriptures are given for reference, and practical applications are in the last few chapters. He uses the first chapters to give reasons and basics and last chapters for applications. I found the application chapters easier to read then the theology chapters. That doesn't mean skip the one, just that it does get clearer. English has changed so much that we might benefit from someone translating this into modern English for a broader audience.
