A Journey Through The In-Between Bookstore
When I first heard that Edward Underhill, a beloved YA author, was branching out into adult fiction, my excitement bubbled over. His knack for vibrant, engaging storytelling always left me wanting more, so I couldn’t resist snagging an ARC of The In-Between Bookstore. The title alone drew me in, hinting at a world where stories intertwine with life in surprising ways. As I delved into the pages, I found both treasures and challenges waiting for me.
The In-Between Bookstore introduces us to Darby, a character whose initial flaws made me both frustrated and curious. Early on, I recognized a disconnection in Darby’s choices—like neglecting to visit his mother, who had always championed him. This jerk-like quality piqued my interest because it set the stage for potential growth; after all, who doesn’t love a flawed character with room to develop? Underhill’s vivid descriptions painted Darby’s world in beautiful strokes, making me smile as I navigated the initial chapters, where the pacing felt just right.
However, as I moved deeper into the story, I found myself shifting in my seat. I craved more introspection, especially regarding Darby’s complicated friendship with Michael. The narrative danced on the surface of healing but went deeper than I had expected—yet didn’t fully deliver the emotional unraveling I hoped for. The fog surrounding Darby’s past created a sense of intrigue but left me wanting; why couldn’t he grasp the full scope of his relationship with Michael?
The latter half of the book became a rollercoaster of emotions and, regrettably, disappointment. Although I went in with the knowledge that this wasn’t a romance, I couldn’t help but feel let down by Darby’s choices towards the end. The disconnect between his existence in bustling New York versus his roots in Illinois felt like a missed opportunity for meaty character exploration. By the final pages, I was wrestling with my feelings—while the first half had soared with four-star potential, the ending left me grappling for a two-star average. In the end, I found my rating plateauing around a solid three stars.
What stood out to me was Underhill’s ability to evoke the beauty in everyday life. His writing resonates with readers who appreciate lush descriptions and authentic characters. I still treasure those moments in the first half that made me smile, so I’m certainly not ready to write off this author entirely. Edward Underhill’s talent shines through, even if this particular story stumbled in its execution.
For readers who enjoy nuanced tales of healing, flawed characters, or a vibrant narrative voice, The In-Between Bookstore has something to offer—even if it might not fulfill every expectation. Personally, this journey challenged me to reflect on growth, understanding, and the complicated webs we weave in our lives. I’m excited to see where Underhill’s next adventure takes us, as I firmly believe in his gift for storytelling and the vivid world he builds. Until then, I encourage you to pick this one up and see where it takes you—you just might find the in-between spaces worth exploring.
Thank you to Avon and NetGalley for the ARC. Happy reading!
