Review of The Ordeals (Killmarth Trials, #1) by Rachel Greenlaw: A Riveting Romantasy Adventure

Wow, what a book! I’ve been on a fantastic streak of romantasy lately, and The Ordeals by Rachel Greenlaw has firmly secured its place as one of my favorites. From its dark academic vibes to the electrifying rivals-to-lovers dynamic, Greenlaw masterfully weaves together all my favorite elements into a compelling narrative that kept me glued to the page.

At the heart of the story is twenty-year-old Sophia DeWinter, an illusionist bound by blood to her cruel uncle, the Collector. Her desperate quest for freedom drives the narrative, and you can’t help but root for her. Gaining admission to Killmarth, an elite magical college, isn’t just about acing the entrance exam; it’s about surviving a series of deadly trials known as the ordeals. The stakes are nail-bitingly high—out of 52 hopefuls, only 20 will make it, and that’s not even the most terrifying part. To my shock, contestants begin to perish unexpectedly between trials, elevating the tension and intrigue.

I loved the diverse magic system that Greenlaw has crafted, filled with unique wielders like masquiers, alchemists, and, of course, the enigmatic botanist, Alden Locke, who becomes Sophia’s ally and rival. Each character brings their own strengths and secrets, making for a rich ensemble that drives the story forward. The writing is fluid and immersive, making it effortless to lose myself in this captivating world.

The narrative pacing is spot-on, balancing action with character development. The trials themselves evoke memories of The Hunger Games—the sense of urgency and risk is palpable! However, I found myself questioning some of the more brutal aspects of the trials. Did deaths really need to happen? Dismissals might have sufficed; it’s a minor gripe, but worth noting.

Sophia is a standout character who embodies determination and resilience. She constantly evolves from a shadowed illusionist to a fierce competitor, learning to trust others while holding on to her compassion, even when it could compromise her own chances. Alden’s strategic mind and inner struggles add a delicious layer of complexity to their relationship. Their slow-burn romance is not the focal point, yet it infuses the story with emotional undercurrents that enhance their character arcs.

One of my favorite moments comes when Sophia learns that vulnerability isn’t a weakness; it’s a tool in her arsenal. This theme resonates profoundly, showing how strength often lies in connection and empathy.

In conclusion, I devoured The Ordeals in just a couple of days—its intensity had me hooked! Greenlaw crafts a thrilling and cleverly plotted story that leaves plenty of threads dangling, piquing my anticipation for the sequel. If you’re a fan of dark academia, fierce rivalries, and gripping magical trials, then this book is an essential addition to your reading list. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a fresh, exhilarating take on the genre.
