Pants on Fire

by Meg Cabot

Book Summary

Katie Ellison is not a liar.

It’s just that telling the truth is so . . . tricky. She knows she shouldn’t be making out with a drama club hottie behind her football-player boyfriend’s back. She should probably admit that she can’t stand eating quahogs (clams), especially since she’s running for Quahog Princess in her hometown’s annual Quahog Festival. And it would be a relief to finally tell someone what really happened the night Tommy Sullivan is a freak was spray-painted on the new wall outside the junior high school gymnasium—in neon orange, which still hasn’t been sandblasted off. After all, everyone knows that’s what drove Tommy out of town four years ago.

But now Tommy Sullivan has come back. Katie is sure he’s out for revenge, and she’ll do anything to hang on to her perfect (if slightly dishonest) existence. Even if it means telling more lies than ever. Even if, now that Tommy’s around, she’s actually—no lie—having the time of her life.

Britney’s Book Review

I’ve always, ALWAYS loved Meg Cabot books. In Pants on Fire, she really brings out Katie’s hilarious voice. Spunky and rebellious, Katie doesn’t seem to know what she wants. Even when she is cheating on her boyfriend, Meg somehow twists the story into wanting to take Katie’s side. No only that, but everything she does seems to lead towards lying, whether its pretending to love Quahogs, or pretending to love running for Quahog Princess.

Just when she thinks she can keep these little lies to herself, a BOY shows up. And not just any boy, but a hottie named Tommy Sullivan. The problem is, Katie’s been keeping secrets about what really happened when Tommy left Connecticut. Only, she’s not sure she can resist him now that he’s back. Especially when he starts digging up her own lies she’s tried so hard to keep to herself.

I love this book because Meg makes is easy to connect when her characters. You really feel what Katie is going through, and begin to be dragged right along through her drama. Only, Meg’s sense of humor through any situation provides a fun, witty story that’s hard to put down.

If you loved Mia in the Princess Diaries or Jess in the 1-800 Where Are You series, you’ll get along with Katie and her world. It’s a delightful read that comes to a feel good ending.
