Colasanti doesn’t just bring you back to high school, she practically shoves you into the corridors of the brutal, the lustful, and the overall confusion of high school. Written in three different perspectives, she captures what goes on inside a broken-hearted perfectionist, a bitter rebel, and a straight-edge romanticist.
I really liked that Colasanti explains what it’s like to go to high school in New York City. It’s a fresh outlook compared to the boring suburbia schools we tend to hear about. Everything from the atmosphere of the crazy city, to the slang words kids throw around adds to the setting.
At some points, it tends to jump around a bit. Mostly because you are hearing the same story three different times from three different students, who are all connected in some way. Once you keep reading, you eventually see how everything ties together. The pacing could be a little faster to get you there, but it works.
What I wasn’t expecting was the sadness in the problems these teenagers faced. Nicole struggles in her own thoughts, deciding whether or not to come clean about the abuse that seems to suffocate her. I’m not one to spoil the endings, but it did catch me off guard to how much of an impact somebody can make. I really did like it, and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a fun, poolside-type read.
