A Tide of Black Steel: A Captivating Dive into a World of Valor and Intrigue
When I stumbled upon Anthony Ryan’s A Tide of Black Steel, the first book in the Age of Wrath trilogy, I felt a magnetic pull. Perhaps it was the allure of a new epic fantasy universe or the author’s reputation for crafting immersive narratives. I initially intended to dip into his previous series, Raven’s Shadow, but the enticing premise of this novel called to me like a siren song. I’m elated to say it lived up to the allure!
Right from the outset, A Tide of Black Steel invites us into the turbulent world of Ascarlia, a land inspired by Viking-age history yet distinctly unique. The narrative unfolds through four compelling perspectives: Thera, the fierce warrior; Fulnir, her disgraced brother; Ruhlin, the enigmatic slave; and Elvine, the scholar with a thirst for ancient secrets. Each character stands at a crossroads, driven by their hopes, fears, and quests for redemption, which ultimately intertwine against the backdrop of rising tension from the ominous Fire Isles.
Thera, the Black Spear, was my absolute favorite among the protagonists. She radiates strength and determination, as her quest to bring justice to the Outer Isles provides an emotional anchor for the story. My heart raced alongside her as she navigated challenges and built bonds with her crew, particularly her captivating relationship with the mysterious Lynnea. Thera’s journey outlines the heart of the novel, and I’m eagerly anticipating how her destiny unfolds in the upcoming installments—especially after that jaw-dropping ending!
Conversely, while I found Fulnir’s character intriguing as the "hard-headed sibling," I wasn’t as invested in his narrative arc. There’s a personal bias here—I’m not a fan of treasure-hunting storylines—but I did appreciate the contrasts he brought to Thera’s demeanor. His closing moments left enough intrigue to keep me curious about where his journey could lead.
Ruhlin, the Fire Blood, came close to dethroning Thera as my favorite character. His sympathetic nature and the intriguing powers that hide in his veins kept me enthralled. The battle scenes he participated in were intense and beautifully crafted, adding a visceral dimension to the story. I enjoyed peering into the lives of the Fire Isles through his personal experiences, which granted a rich nuance to their often-misunderstood essence.
Elvine, the Heretic Scribe, however, had me grappling with some frustration. Her arc didn’t fully resonate with me until the plot thickened more than halfway through. I appreciate strong female perspectives, but after experiencing the vibrancy of Thera, Elvine felt a bit lackluster. Nevertheless, I remain hopeful that her character will evolve in future books.
From a technical standpoint, Ryan’s writing is nothing short of superb. His ability to weave intricate world-building with clear, engaging detail without succumbing to information overload is commendable. It left me captivated, even during the slower parts of the narrative. The gradual build-up of tension leads to an exhilarating climax that made every moment spent in Ascarlia worthwhile.
Overall, I’d rate A Tide of Black Steel a solid 4 out of 5 stars. For fans of Ryan’s Covenant of Steel trilogy, this new series is an exciting evolution, set 20 years later in the same universe. However, even those new to Ryan’s work will find a rich tapestry of emotions, themes, and adventure waiting for them.
If you’re drawn to epic fantasies filled with complex characters, moral dilemmas, and vibrant settings, this book is a must-read. The experience of diving into A Tide of Black Steel was not just a journey through a fantastical realm but also an exploration of honor, legacy, and the struggles that define us.
