Review of Drumindor (The Riyria Chronicles, #5)
As a lifelong fan of fantasy, few moments are as exhilarating as reuniting with beloved characters after a long absence. When I opened "Drumindor," the fifth book in the Riyria Chronicles by Michael J. Sullivan, my heart did a little happy dance. It’s been quite a journey since the last installment, and I was beyond excited to delve back into the world of Royce and Hadrian, two of my all-time favorite characters. After 600 pages filled with witty banter and daring escapades, I can confidently say this book deserves every one of its five heart-warming stars!
From the very first page, it’s like slipping into your favorite sweater—comforting yet exciting. Royce and Hadrian are back, and their repartee feels as fresh and engaging as ever. I couldn’t help but chuckle at their dialogue, which captures their unique chemistry perfectly. That quote, “I hate being drunk,” followed by Hadrian’s retort, “I can see why. You’re lousy at it,” had me grinning from ear to ear. It’s this humor intertwined with genuine camaraderie that makes their dynamic so enjoyable!
I was particularly thrilled to see Gwen, the fierce and resourceful former-prostitute-turned-businesswoman, back in action. Her strength and kindness have always resonated with me, and it was fascinating to explore her dynamic with Royce. Who knew that after four years of knowing each other, they hadn’t even shared a kiss? Their miscommunication and insecurities added layers to their relationship, and Hadrian’s insightful commentary made me appreciate the depth of their interactions. “How can you be so perceptive and intelligent about most things, but so dim-witted about this?” Brilliant!
The world-building in "Drumindor" is exquisite. Sullivan paints Tur Del Fur as a tropical paradise that feels palpable and vibrant. I found myself yearning for a night in a danthum, drawn in by Sullivan’s fantastical descriptions. It’s more than a tavern; it’s a place of exotic entertainment and lavish ambiance. The contrast between this alluring setting and the impending doom of a reawakened volcano creates a delicious tension that kept me turning the pages.
The stakes are surprisingly lower than in previous stories, which made for a wonderfully relaxing reading experience. It’s a comfort story wrapped in an adventure—a delightful combination for those dreary days. The narrative flowed beautifully, and Sullivan’s writing style strikes a perfect balance between humor and tension, making even predictable outcomes feel fresh and engaging.
By the end, "Drumindor" left me feeling joyful and satiated—an experience both fulfilling and engaging! While it’s a self-contained story, its ties to the larger Riyria lore offer a rewarding experience for fans familiar with the world. For newcomers, I recommend starting with the earlier books to fully appreciate the characters’ journeys and the rich tapestry of Elan.
This book is perfect for anyone looking to escape into a world of humor, adventure, and heartfelt moments. Whether you’re a long-time fan of Royce and Hadrian or a newcomer eager to dive into a fantastic series, "Drumindor" has something for everyone. Personally, my heart is bursting, and I can’t wait for the next installment!
